WORKERS at a Swindon care home spoke of their relief after nearly 50 residents received their first doses of Covid-19 vaccine.

The jab was given to people living at Orchid Care Home on Guernsey Lane, Haydon.

June Freeman, 91, is already looking forward to one day visiting her disabled son, who is in another care home in Swindon.

After having her jab she told the Adver: “I can now see that come the summer that maybe I will see him.”

June, who has not been able to do her own shopping since last March, added: “I’d like to get on my buggy, do a bit of shopping and go to St John’s Church.”

She said the vaccine was painless and she was feeling fine. “It was quite alright. The nurse pulled my shirt up and it was done.”

The home has 50 residents, of whom 49 have agreed to receive the Oxford vaccine.

Manager Dawn Drew said: “Our staff have vaccinated before, so we are now in a really good position now in terms of continuing our battle with Covid.

“It’s hopefully going to make life a little bit easier for us and of course we’ve got the security that our residents have received their first dose which will undoubtedly offer them some protection as well, which was our prime concern to be honest, so I am absolutely delighted.”

Orchid has been praised for its efforts in preventing Covid infection in a Care Quality Commission’s report.

The doses were administered from the Home Ground practice.

Dawn added: “They’ve had the first dose and that’s the most important thing and we know they are going to receive their second dose. They haven’t confirmed when it will happen because in some instances, they are delaying the second dose.”
