DIGNITY WEEK AT BIRCHY HILL

We celebrated Dignity with a full week of events, starting with a Crafts morning, where the Residents and the Staff alike made leaves and hearts for our ‘Digni-Tree’ (as shown in the other article)

In the afternoon Information about Dignity in Care was given to our little audience. Opinions and wishes about the topic were brought together and we concluded that Dignity is also Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion.

The ‘leaves’ were labelled with quotes and representatives from our 5 units hung them up the tree.

Our favourite quote was ‘Dignity is respecting other people’s choices!

THE DIGNITY TREE

A poem by Sheryl Parkman

I’m planting my first seed today

The seed of dignity

In time you’ll see my seed will grow

And grow into a tree

A tree fulfilled with knowledge

A plant for all to see

What being a dignity champion

Really means to me

It’s a leaf with an idea on

It’s an idea I’d like to share

It’s an inspirational idea

It’s a leaf to show I care

The tree will always be there

Long after I have gone

To stand up for dignity in care

A challenge to be won

I know you will support me

And I know you’ll love the tree

It’s not just a tree you know

It’s what dignity means to me

WELCOME TO BIRCHY HILL TO JOIN US FOR DIGNITY DAY

The Dignity in Care campaign was launched in November 2006 and aims to put dignity and respect at the heart of UK care services.

The campaign’s core values are about having dignity in our hearts, minds and actions, changing the culture of care services and placing a greater emphasis on improving the quality of care and the experience of citizens using services like care homes.

All were welcomed at Birchy Hill, and many joined us not only for Dignity Day on Friday, but also for many other activities we offered during Dignity Week.

In Birchy Hill Dignity is not just a word. We respect others’ wishes and choices, and hope being treated with the same respect from colleagues, visitors, and residents.

NEWLANDS CELEBRATING “CHANUKAH”

Newlands Jewish Care Home recently celebrated Chanukah

(The Festival of Lights) with the lighting of candles in a Menorah (Candelabra)

Every evening for 8 days. Our Residents took it in turns to kindle 1 light

Each night with 8 shining brightly on the last night. Concerts and entertainment was held every afternoon with keyboard players and singers.

During the week leading up to Christmas, we had 3 concerts with entertainers playing and singing seasonal music with many of our Residents joining in and singing along to all the well known tunes.

Eva Kay celebrated her 105th birthday on 13th January 2018 together with her Family . A party was held in her honour – unfortunately we couldn’t find a cake big enough to fit 105 candles .

We also had a photographer from the Jewish Chronicle which is a national newspaper also came along to take pictures of Eva and her Family

Joanne our Manager asked Eva “what her secret was to get to such a ripe old age” to which Eva replied ” you just keep going ”

Congratulations to Eva from all at Angel Care PLC
